Candid recordings of Women Pedal Pumping and Cranking their cars

These are clips of Real women pedal pumping trying to start, starting and cranking their cars that I have recorded over the years. They include neighbours, colleagues, family and strangers who have had car trouble for one reason or another!!

Most of the clips are sound only with still photos, as video was not available cheaply or covertly over the period from the mid 1980's to mid 2000s. Sadly all these old cars have gone now so it is not possible to easily flood or rig a car for a show. The best to hope for is to get lucky on a cold day and find a lady with a flat battery, hot or damp is no longer a problem.

If only we had smart phones back in they day, but I guess then we would not have had unreliable cars!

12. School Librarian cranking her E reg Renault 5 1.1 during the lunch break - $6.99 (7 minutes)

Back in the day I was doing my A Levels and was scouring the school car park one lunchtime with my dictaphone (Lol), as some of the teachers cars took a few tries to get going when they went home/into town. They parked in the play areas - no health and safety then. It was the back end of the carb era and fuel injection had been mandatory for a few years already. The Librarians Renault 5 was normally a bit tempremental, but on this day I got a whole more than I bargained for. 13. Office worker cranking her flooded J reg Rover Metro 1.1 after work - $5.99 (6 minutes)

I worked with this lady in an office years ago - back in the early 2000's. She was around 30 then and had nice legs. One day she had a meeting all afternoon and left her bag and keys on her desk. This was to much of a temptation for me! I also managed to get a photo of her at lunchtime. It was summer and a warm day, so when she went to start her car she must not have used any choke to start with, however I suspect she started to use more and more to help it start! Since the engine was already flooded this was not the correct option. Eventually she must have started reducing the choke, as it was not helping. Luckily for her it was warm, her battery was in good nick and the car was otherwise well maintained. Sorry for the heavy breathing but this was the excitement. 14. Partner cranking her damp S reg Range Rover V8 4.0 after work - $5.99 (6 minutes) NEW

There had been torrential rain in the morning and rain on and off all day, so it would not be unexpected to find moisture in a distributor cap. This Partner is off home in her S reg 4.0L Range Rover V8 and was sort of woman who was determined to get on her way. Despite the car been fuel injected it teases, as the spark almost finds its way to the HT leads in the middle of the clip as she struggles to get going. With all the cranking the spark must have started to weaken with the battery. I think women who cannot get their flash cars to start are exciting, because they do not expect or are used to car trouble and they do not like it. 15. Student cranking her F REG Renault 5 with a flat battery on a cold morning - $5.99 (5 minutes)

This student is off to her lecture on a cold morning in her F reg Renault 5 1.1TL. With older cars that did not get used all the time and younger drivers University was a good hunting ground for cranking. It amazes me how long old cars (and drivers) could crank with a weak battery back then. Now cars, especially petrol ones seem to just start until the battery packs up and you are lucky to get 30 seconds of cranking. Diesels seem to crank longer these days. The weak battery obviously struggles to provide enough spark to ignite the fuel, so I think she partly flooded it and/or it was damp from lack of use. Either way it did not want to go that morning. 16. Lady starting her N REG Ford Fiesta with a worn glow plugs and on a cold Saturday afternoon - $5.99 (5 minutes)

Lets go back to December 1999 just before Christmas. This lady was living in our block of flats, she and her sister are off out to deliver Christmas presents in her diesel Fiesta. The 4 year old battery and glow plugs are suffering and looking at the car I don't think it got much attention. The glow plug cycle was always to short on the Endura D engine at the best of times, resulting in many botched starts anyway. She gave it a crank alright, towards the end I thought she was going to burn the starter out. 18. Mature Lady starting her Mercedes 124 on a cold Saturday in town - $5.99 (5 minutes)

Here we are on a cold day in Janurary 1995. I was working on Saturday job in a affluent middle England market town. This well to do lady often came into town in her Mercedes 124/Eclass, although by no means young I imagine she would have been a looker back in the day and still had great legs, which she showed off.. I am not sure what year car is because it was on a private plate, which concealed the year, as Mercedes did not tweak the models during their production runs. Though I suspect it was older hence the plate. I am not sure if it was a 200 with automatic choke on the Stromberg carb playing up, as the engine was neither totally cold or warm from sitting a while. Or it may have been the early generation fuel injection throwing a wobbly with a temp sensor, as most models were FI. I think she may have had lots of experience of starting cars over the years. 19. Bad KArma Indian Girl trying to start her KA on a chilly Monday morning - $5.99 (5 minutes)

A chilly Monday morning in November 2005. This good looking Indian Girl parked her car overnight outside where I was based and went off to work before the parking charges became live, in the morning. As the mornings got cooler I noticed her battery was weaker when she started up each day. I don't think she had used it on Sunday and it was about 2C. It almost catches at first, but she obviously had not been taught to use any throttle when starting. After a while from the sound and smell in street I think it overfueled. She tried to do some kind of bump start, thinking you roll and crank the starter, but she was on a hill and as you will see from the photos she ended rolling back and boxing in the Range Rover behind. I have to say her facial expressions are priceless, as she has to walk in the cold while explaining her car would not start on her mobile. She had bare legs and no gloves (as it would be warm in her car) as she had one hand in her pockets. Sorry about the background noise it was near the ring road of a big city centre. 20. Cranking after the Conference - $3.99 (3 minutes)

The boss has had trouble starting her car in the cold weather. She has been away at a conference for a couple of days and she comes back to her cold Mazda RX8. Seems the weak battery and a starter motors that were known to be underrated make for a great sound of a rotary engine trying to start. 21. Snowy Student Cranking - $5.99 - (5 minutes)

November 1997 and this students D Reg Fiesta Mk2 1.1 has been sitting in the freezing weather because she did not like to drive in the Snow. Now the snow has started to melt she feels confident enough to take her car out. This clips features a great struggle pedal pumping a stone cold engine and a weak battery, as she tries to get going. 22. Cold Citroen Xsara - $4.99 - (4 minutes)

November 2007 and this lady is off to work in her 02 Citroen Xsara with a 5 year old battery and glow plugs. I don't think she knew how to thrash a diesel into life, as she tried little short attempts to start with, which in a modern diesel sounded like a petrol. As the battery got weaker the cranking sound reverted to a much more diesel type noise, almost as if it is in the DNA. You would have thought she had the experience to floor it so that it would catch and stay running. I think she worked it out eventually but no doubt she had been told not to use the pedal when starting a modern car, so did what she had been told. Just imagine sitting there in the cold car as she turns the key time and time again with her leather gloved hand hoping she will get going this morning. 23. Mum Cranking and Pedal Pumping her Danp Mini - $6.99 - (6 minutes)

Late October 1990 (I think) and Mum is going to give me a lift to school on cool sunny Autumn morning . However she has not started her car for a week because of been away on holiday and the car has been sitting outside in the damp British weather, with silicon HT leads. As you will see she was dressed in a typical late 80's early 90's way with nice brown leather pull on boots and a long camel coat. You can hear everything going on inside as she gets frustrated while she struggles to start her little Mini again and again. 24. Woman Cranking and Pedal Pumping her flooded Rover 214s - $7.99 - (7 minutes+)

July 1999 and this woman is off home after work in her white J Reg 3 door Rover 214s (the girly base model without fuel injection). For some reason this bad tempered and moody womans car is flooded on this particular afternoon. It almost starts first time, as I guess she did not use any choke, as it was a summers day. When she does use the choke this does not help at all and it took her ages to start trying it with reduced choke. I think she must have been pumping like mad at the end as you will hear, as she tries again and again for over 7 minutes to get going (not the type to give up). If you liked the Metro clip 13 then this is for you, as the K series engine makes that coughing noise as it tries to catch, but her battery was not as good, plus the starter sounded like it was burning later on. More from this lady in due course, as she has trouble starting her car in the morning, when it was damp and her battery packed up "I just want to turn the key and go" was one quote. 25. Cranking after work again - $7.99 - (7 minutes+)

The same lady and Mk 3 Ford Fiesta as in clip 5, Cranking After Work. She told me that she had struggled to start her car that morning and that it kept stalling when she tried to drive off, until she let it warm up. I had suggested a new battery but she was said "what is the point until it won't start at all" happy days! Strange clip in a way, as the battery starts off weak but after she almost gets going she then proceeds to flood it and the engine spins more quickly/freely. Something to do with the oil been lifted to the head reducing friction and/or less compression from the fuel in the cylinder?

It always amazed me how women after a real struggle and with a rough running engine would try to drive straight off, only to stall again with the battery already weakened. I once saw a lady struggle to get a Vauxhall Belmont going on a car park in 1995, only to keep stalling as she entered the traffic with her lights on and the battery really struggling each time. Sadly I did not get a recording. I still wonder to this day if she got home?

Just imagine the lady in this clip working the pedals with her long expensive soft black leather boots. You wonder why she did not let it warm up again, but I guess that is why we love women cranking, because they defy logic sometimes. They just want to get going! 26. Indian Girl Cranking her BMW 3 series Coupe - $4.99 - (4 minutes+)

One for the fans of a more modern car. November 2009 and this Indian girl is off to work in her 54 plate BMW 3 series coupe. Unluckily for her I suspect her 5 year old battery was not so keen. I think this was one of those situations where there is enough current to crank the engine at a reasonableish speed for the first few tries without getting a good enough spark to get compression. In some ways a women in a small base type car, or an expensive type sports cars are the best for cranking. Mid sizes cars such as Vectra, Insignia, Mondeo, 406, Laguna etc always leave me a bit cold. Don't worry she got a jump start and I noticed she was wearing a skirt with a split down the front that you can just see on one of the photos. Quite distracting I must say. 27. Mrs A trying to start her Mk4 Ford Escort after school - $7.99 - (7 minutes)

October 1995. Following a damp day Mrs A is off home after school in her Red F reg Mk4 1.3 Ford Escort, wearing her rain coat . Their is something exciting about a very strict determined women who cannot get her car started. She keeps going at it time and again. You can hear in the clip the times when she came off the throttle, as the engine almost catches only to revert to a lifeless crank. NEW 28. Girl trying to start her Corsa in the rain - $4.99 - (4 minutes)

November 2006. This girl is off out shopping in her 51 plate Vauxhall Corsa C on a damp rainy Saturday morning. Will she get going, or will she run her battery down? The clip contains a sound recording of events, with real still photographs of her i.e. not a video recording.

29. Very Mature Lady cranking her Mk2 Polo - $6.99 - (6 minutes)

March 1995. This mature lady lived by Grandparents and did not use her 1.0L D reg Polo very much at all. This clips contains one of those situations where I think the auto choke was playing up, as she had to crank it and crank it to find any sign of life. However when she left it to idle on its own it splutters out and when she tries to rev it up it coughs out on her. You just don't get anything like this today. Will she find the correct combination? Please be aware she was quite mature - the oldest you are going to see on here (unless I catch anything this Winter). 30. Woman cranking her damp flooded Renault 5 - $9.99 - (10 minutes)

August 1999. This over ambitious and pushy woman from work comes back to her H Reg Renault 5 to find that it will not start in the Summer rain. Perhaps it is flooded anway for some reason before she starts?!. The car was certainly on its second battery to keep going that long. That photo is not of her on the same day, as the rain prevented good windscreen shots. However it is a few days after and you will notice that she is walking to her car with her fingers crossed. 31. Woman cranking her overfueled and flooded new Mini - $6.99 - (6 minutes)

Jan 2006. What happems when your modern Mini has been started and stopped straight away loads of times and you come back to it on a freezing winters afternoon? Perhaps it is overfueled before she starts?!. Perhaps you should rev it up? Perhaps you should be more pleasant to people? 32. Mum trying to go to work in her Fiat Panda on a freezing frosty morning - $9.99 - (9 minutes)

Jan 1994. Mum is off to work in her G reg Fiat Panda 1000cl on a freezing cold frosty Monday morning. You get to hear her scraping the ice off her frozen little car and then she gets in start it up. You can hear her soft black leather boot pumping as she sits there in the freezing cold trying again and again to start her little car, whilst pleading for it to start. 33. A Mum trying to start her Mk2 VW Golf on a Sunday morning - $5.99 - (5 minutes)

March 2001. A Mum and her son are off to church on a Sunday morning in her Red L Reg Mk 3 Golf. Some kind of ignition problem, sensor or fuel pump issue means it does not want to start easily and stay running. Will she win the battle to get going. 34. Teacher trying to start her Nova/Corsa A after school - $6.99 - (6 minutes)

This teacher back in the day was one of those who left straight away after school had finished, before they were made to stay longer! She is off in her white E Reg Vauxhall Nova/Opel Corsa A 1.2, as other pupils leave. She was wearing those nice long 1990's type pull on boots that were quite distracting in class. She has said that her car needed looking at, because it was hard to start in the morning (perhaps that was where she was taking it). Funny to think she might be pushing 70 now. 35. Office Worker cranking her Nissan Micra K10 after work - $7.99 - (8 minutes)

November 1998 it had rained first thing, so damp would not be totally unexpected in the electrics! This woman is off home in her 1.2L Red J Micra K10. The clips starts with a good battery and she almost gets her engine to catch after a few tries, but it will not run, then she has to crank it longer and longer to almost get it to catch. As you can imagine this takes its toll on her battery, as she tries again and again to start her car. 36. Young woman cranking her Peugeot 106 diesel - $5.99 - (5 minutes)

Jan 2000 it is a freezing cold snowy morning and this young woman is off to work in her red N Reg Peugeot 106 1.5XND, which is parked outside her block of flats. Imagine the frustration as she get in and turns the key only to be met with a slow lifeless cranking, as she sits there in the cold churning away again and again trying to start her car. What is more she has very nice, but also the wrong footwear for walking in the snow, as you can see from the photo, she is gingerly tip toeing to the car trying not to slip. October 2002 and this woman is off to work in her white M Reg Suzuki Vitara. I think she must have had damp in her distributor, as she cranks ans cranks trying to get going. She is dressed nicely for the wet with her long rain coat, black gloves and boots . Another case of not bothering with a service. This woman is off to work in her VW Polo on a cold morning. Imagine that sinking feeling she gets as she turns the key only to me met with the sound of her engine struggling to catch, while she sits there trying to get going as cars go by. 39. Woman cranking trying to pick her children - $4.99 - (4+ minutes)

November 2009 and this woman is off to pick up her children from school in her 03 Ford Focus 1.6 on a cold afternoon. In the clip you will see the shot of her walking to the car with as pensive look whilst holding the end of her car key, as if for luck, she must have been concerned about her car starting. Girl cranking /trying to start her Fiat Punto - $5.99 - (5 minutes)

November 2006 and this Indian girl is off home in her 51 Reg Fiat Punto. She could not get it to start that morning and had to get a jump start. "Am I going to have the same problem again tonight?" she said. You can see she is thinking about her car not starting from the look on her face and then she appears to mentally rehearse trying to start her car by holding her arm and hand as if she is turning the key! Mum trying to start her Mini on a wet Saturday morning, to go shopping. Imagine a woman today sitting in her car for 8+ minutes trying to get going. Her little car coughs and almost catches, whilst her battery runs down from the repeated attempts to start her engine. This clip is outside only. 42. Girl trying to start her Nissan Micra on a cold morning - $6.99 - (6 minutes)

I have called this clip the girl next door, as she was neither stunning, or ugly just quite normal. November 2001 and she is off to work in her N reg Nissan Micra( K11). The sample clip is after she has run down her battery even more, after trying lots of times to start her engine. The cranking is quicker to start with, as her engine almost tries catches, but then to much fuel meets a weak spark. You can see the frustration on her face from the photo. 43. Very Good looking student girl trying to start her Citroen AX - $7.99 - (7 minutes)

What we all want to see and hear a very good looking young woman trying to start her little Citroen AX in the street after it has not been used for a while. It is almost catching for her, but will she flood her engine, and/or flatten her battery before she can get going? August 1999 and a young admin girl comes back to her H reg Peugeot 205 after work, not knowing it is already flooded, so she proceeds to use some choke after a few tries. Ah the days when the production of carb cars had only stopped 7 years before and you could rig a show with a nice looking girl. Will she get going, or flatten her battery first? 45. Woman craking her Citroen C3 - $6.99 - (6 minutes)

November 2008 and I guess an Asian woman originally from Indonesia or Malaysia was having trouble starting her 52 reg Citroen C3 that morning. This was due to worn glow plugs in my opinion.? 46. Woman cranking her flooded Mk3 Fiesta - $7.99 - (7 minutes)

The same lady and Mk 3 Ford Fiesta as in clip 5 and 25 , Cranking After Work. This is well before she had battery problems. She comes to go home after work but her car is flooded. Using choke probably was not a good idea! Amazing how a women would try again and again to start her engine without much rest between tries to start with, especially when it teases almost wanting to catch but splutters out. 47. Woman cranking her D reg Mk2 1.1 Fiesta - $9.99 - (9 minutes)

First day back to work after the Christmas break and this lady neighbour has not used her car for almost 2 weeks. I guess this is why we love a women, cranking in the morning when she could have tried it the night before, to make sure it started. Instead we get a morning show, as she gets into her cold car that has been sitting there and tries to go off to work. Women of that vintage were prepared to fight with their cars to get it going. Her weakening battery starts to struggle, as her engine sounds like it really almost wants to catch. So she keeps trying to get going again and again. 48. Student cranking her F REG Renault 5 - $9.99 - (11 minutes+)

The same student and car as in Clip 15 trying to coax her little used Renault 5 into life for 11 plus minutes. This was before her battery packed up on her in the cold weather, but is was starting to show signs of weakness. 49. Legal Professional cranking her Mazda MX - $7.99 - (7 minutes)

A chilly Autumn morning and this woman is off to work in her Mazda MX5, which she had not used all weekend. Her battery is weak but her car struggles into life only to die out on, her spark must have been very weak. Then she struggles to start up a few more times only for the engine to die out on her each time. By this time the combination of a weak battery and a fuel rich engine causes her to lose compression. Ironically meaning that her weak battery can crank for longer. Imagine the sinking feeling of sitting in the car park of your block of flats early in the morning turning the key with her leather glove to get on her way, but instead the engine just slowly cranks away. Her battery spins the starter fairly briskly to start with but she does not realise her engine is already flooded. She goes through most of the stages of a Mk3 Fiesta, cranking with a flooded engine, it almost catching, coughing out and running on one cylider and then that amazing different change of sound as the battery begins to weaken and the cranking gets slower but it still trying to start. She keeps trying as it sounds like it wants to start but her repeated attempts and the cold morning start to take their toll on her battery. Couple of links worth reading re the flooding of fuel injected cars after running for a short time with Winter coming up. I once suggested this to someone in the PP community who tried it with his wifes car on a very cold Winters day. It took her 8 tries to get her Ford C-max started and it stalled once as well . Even easier if the battery is not the best alog with the plugs. Some de-flood procedures do call for use of the throttle. Needs to be cold though - around freezing to work.
